Our History

1865
1865

150 years ago, Adamjee Lukmanjee, a courageous trader from Gujarat on a voyage in the Indian Ocean set foot in Sri Lanka. In 1865 he founded a business in Pettah to trade spices and other commodities.

1907
1907

Adamjee Lukmanjee set up one of the Sri Lanka’s First coconut oil manufacturing  facilities in Grandpass, where the current office premises is still located.

1934
1934

ALS wins the award for the “Best Manufacturer of Coconut Oil & poonac”

1950
1950

The company Expanded massively acquiring Tea, Rubber & Coconut plantations across the island, and thus trading in these commodities Locally and Globally.

1980
1980

The company was forced into a period of resistance as the socialist reforms saw a bulk of its land & assets taken over by the Government.

A new generation of leaders were able to gradually rebuild and continue to diversify into other sectors.

2000
2000

Imports have also been an essential part of the company’s diversification strategy. Over the 2000s ALS established itself as a leading importer of cement  & animal feed into Sri Lanka.

2015
2015

 ALS began manufacturing Virgin Coconut Oil in its new state of the art manufacturing facility in Pannala.

Today, this factory manufactures a range of products including VCO, DC, Coconut chips, Creamed Coconut and more.

2018
2018

ALS initiated an out-grower project for vanilla cultivation in the Matale district, partnering with small-scale local farmers in order to export cured Vanilla pods to Western markets. 

2022
2022

 ALS ventures into manufacturing plant-based products and tropical fruits such as canned jackfruit & pineapple, in a new facility next to its current coconut facility in Pannala.

NCE Merit Award

Merit Award in Agriculture awarded by National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka Gold Award.

2000

Best Export Performance

Best Export Performance from Sri Lanka to Pakistan granted by Karachi Kiriyana Merchants Group, Pakistan.

2001

NCE Gold Award

Gold Award for export performance in Agriculture Non Traditional, awarded by National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka.

2019

NCE Silver Award

Silver Award for export performance in Agriculture Non Traditional, awarded by National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka.

2020 & 2021

NCE Bronze Award

Bronze Award for export performance in Agriculture Non Traditional, awarded by National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka.

2014

Global Commerce excellence award

Global Commerce excellence award in recognition of supporting the Sri Lankan Economy, awarded by Shippers Academy Colombo.

Presidential Merit Award awarded by the Export Development Board for export performance in Coconut & Coconut based products
